Die Galerie 89 in Aarwangen 1989–2014.

20.02.–22.06.25

From 1989 to 2014, Ursina and Beat Wälchli-Casty ran Gallery 89 in Aarwangen. Their own self-taught interest in contemporary art — an enthusiasm they had had since their youth — gave rise to a successful gallery in an unusual location outside the major art centers. The exhibitions were held on the premises of his own company, a traditional catering firm, and every vernissage was a veritable celebration of art. The enthusiasm for art was contagious and generated a loyal regular audience and a group of buyers who began collecting art through Galerie 89. The gallery’s program promoted local artists as well as national and international positions. Kunsthaus Langenthal opened shortly after Galerie 89, and both were part of a spirit of optimism for contemporary art in the Oberaargau region. The exhibition traces the history of this small art miracle in the periphery from the holdings of the former gallery and the Wälchli-Casty Collection.
